intimate stories
Do you have Vegas wedding ideas/ stories?

My fiance and I wantto get married in Vegas ALONE. No family members or friends. We don’t necessarily want to put the $ out for a wedding chapel if it’s only going to be the two of us. Nor do we want to get married in a drive thru or under the Welcome to Las Vegas sign. Does anyone have any ideas for a romantic intimate wedding that doesn’t involve big planning or an insane amount of money. (or a drive thru) I’d appreciate any feedback.

I would just do a wedding chapel – have them pick you up in a limo(part of a package deal) – and you can get some pics….. AND, your family can watch it LIVE on their computer – this is at the chapel of the flowers. and, they can check out your pictures a few hours after you are married.

Paul McCartney’s account of his second famous rock band only glosses over his personal and professional life during the 1970s, clocking in at 88 minutes. Wingspan is also a valentine to McCartney’s …

Intimate Worlds

Intimate Worlds

$14.49

Scarf knows the intricacies of the family structure and even better knows how to write well about them. In Intimate Worlds as in most of our lives family is riveting white-knuckle stuff." –The Washington Post Book World In Intimate Worlds bestselling author Maggie Scarf takes on the most important and most universal subject of her distinguished career: the family. As the first social organization that we each encounter the family is where we learn the most fundamental and enduring lessons of our lives. Yet for too many those lessons turn out to be painful perplexing and emotionally crippling. In this luminous beautifully written book Scarf brilliantly examines the complex ways in which families create their own intimate rules and patterns of interaction and how by understanding these dynamics we can each improve the quality of our own family life. At the book’s core are the stories of four fascinating families and the very different ways they enact the central issues of family life: power and intimacy; conflict and love; individuality and group identification. Spanning the spectrum of family health from dysfunctional through optimal these families grapple with serious substance abuse sexual problems difficulties with attachment and nurturance eating disorders and buried resentments that surface generation after generation. As Maggie Scarf probes the motives and meanings of these compelling dramas she reveals the essential truths of how families shape human identity. Combining lucid analysis with warm human understanding Intimate Worlds is a major work that both clarifies and deepens our knowledge of family relationships. "Wrought with care and commitment it is meticulously researched and will I think serve as a valuable resource for families struggling to understand themselves." –Los Angeles Times From the Trade Paperback edition.

Women of Courage: Intimate Stories from Afghanistan

Women of Courage: Intimate Stories from Afghanistan

$3.94

Women of Courage shares an intimate look at the inspiring women who are forging a new future in Afghanistan and playing a crucial role in the changing landscape of this turbulent nation. First-hand stories and experiences are shared in conversations with a wide array of women-from a beekeeper to a presidential candidate to an Olympic sprinter to a schoolteacher. Mesmerizing photographs accompany unfiltered interviews, giving voice to a culture of women that has been silenced for decades under the oppressive regime of the Taliban.

Intimate Dialogues

Intimate Dialogues

$6.68

Nagging discontent runs through these spare and often humorous stories, presented by a narrator who conducts surveys for a living. Fed up with watching television with her husband every night rather than going out, she finds, through her polls, other women who also feel stuck–their entertainment is food, the computer, and crossword puzzles. Each of them wants to take up new activities and get out of the daily grind, but all of them describe unexpected obstacles, as in the story of Lea’s decision to take belly dancing lessons with her friend Maud and her husband’s surprising reaction.

Long Walks and Intimate Talks: Stories, Poems and Paintings

Long Walks and Intimate Talks: Stories, Poems and Paintings

$5.27

This first collaboration of two long-time feminist and antiwar activists is a wonderful melding of word and image that creates a powerful call for world peace. Paley’s poems and short fiction and William’s vivid watercolors depict the beauty and dignity of "ordinary" lives from El Salvador to the Bronx, from New Hampshire to Vietnam. Scenes and stories of domestic life, solitude, and nature are interspersed with heart-wrenching images of women widowed and children crippled by war and incarcerated by urban poverty, Here, too, are stories and paintings of protest, joyous and defiant.

Companions for the Passage: Stories of the Intimate Privilege of Accompanying the Dying

Companions for the Passage: Stories of the Intimate Privilege of Accompanying the Dying

$20.28

"In a society which denies death Marjorie Ryerson’s book can help everyone awaken to the beauty and meaning of life. Death is the greatest teacher I know of, about life, and by sharing the stories within this book with us she will help us all to live fuller, more meaningful lives." -Bernie Siegel, M.D., author of "Help Me to Heal" and "365 Prescriptions for the Soul" "Ryerson offers us the rare opportunity to free ourselves from fear and recognize in our own lives the power of love and the presence of mystery. A book for anyone who has ever wondered what it takes to face the unknown." -Rachel Naomi Remen, M.D., author of "Kitchen Table Wisdom" and "My Grandfather’s Blessings" ""Companions for the Passage" provides a unique look at the ways people adapt to loss. These are powerful stories for anyone who has experienced the death of a loved one." —J. Donald Schumacher, President and CEO, National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization "Companions for the Passage," from the author of the acclaimed "Water Music," is an unforgettable book on a rarely visited subject: the personal stories of those who have witnessed the death of a loved one. Similar to works of Studs Terkel, author Marjorie Ryerson’s interviews capture the human condition through their wide variety of experiences and voices. Some of the interviewees are religious, some not; some encouraged their loved ones to accept death, others to fight it to the end. There are stories of heroic nurses and of indifferent hospital bureaucracies, of deaths that came too soon, and those that came at the end of a long, rich life. Possessing an affirmative quality that is anything but sentimental, ultimately thesestories celebrate the experience of being present at the death of a loved one.

Because Kwong-roshi can transmit the most intimate thing in the most accessible way, we learn how to ignite our own vitality, wisdom, and compassion and awaken a feeling of intimacy with the world. It is like having a conversation with our deepest and wisest self. Jakusho Kwong-roshi was originally inspired to study Zen because of zenga, the ancient art of Zen calligraphy. Throughout this book he combines examples of his unique style with less well-known stories from the Zen tradition, personal anecdotes including moving and humorous stories of his training with Suzuki-roshi and his own lucid and inspiring teachings to draw all readers into this intimate expression of the enlightening world of Zen: the world of who we are. Marilyn MonroeÂ’s image is so universal that we canÂ’t help but believe that we know all there is to know of her. Every word and gesture made headlines and garnered controversy. Her serious gifts as an actor were sometimes eclipsed by her notoriety – and the way the camera fell helplessly in love with her. But what of the other Marilyn? Beyond the headlines – and the too-familiar stories of heartbreak and desolation – was a woman far more curious, searching, and hopeful than the one the world got to know. Even as Hollywood studios tried to mold and suppress her, Marilyn never lost her insight, her passion, and her humor. To confront the mounting difficulties of her life, she wrote. Now, for the first time, we can meet this private Marilyn and get to know her in a way we never have before. Fragments is an unprecedented collection of written artifacts – notes to herself, letters, even poems – in MarilynÂ’s own handwriting, never before published, along with rarely seen intimate photos.

The Impossibility of Sex: Stories of the Intimate Relationship Between Therapist and Patient

The Impossibility of Sex: Stories of the Intimate Relationship Between Therapist and Patient

$18.63

The conventional view of a patient in therapy has been that of someone who forms a powerful, erotic bond with the therapist. On the other hand, the view of the therapist has been that of a neutral listener, emotionally unaffected by the patient. But what really does go on within the sacrosanct space of the therapist’s office? Distinguished psychotherapist Susie Orbach provides the answers as she presents six stories of patients, all of whom suffer from such common afflictions as depression, loneliness, compulsive eating, consuming sexual desires, and fear of attachment. In each story, Orbach reveals not just the client’s problems, but — with startling honesty — the effect the client has on her as therapist. "The Impossibility of Sex" breaks new ground by taking us into the center of the therapy relationship, one usually shrouded by therapist-client confidentiality. From the unlikely role the therapist plays in the troubled relationship of two lesbians to the unsettling dreams the therapist experiences while treating a man consumed by sexual desire, Orbach illuminates the complex human interactions at the heart of the therapeutic process and the "joint discoveries" that contribute to its effectiveness.

These three stories celebrate the eye even as they reveal its unexpected proximity to the heart. For if each of A.S. Byatt’s narratives is in some way inspired by a painting of Henri Matisse, each is also about the intimate connection between seeing and feeling–about the ways in which a glance we meant to be casual may suddenly call forth the deepest reserves of our being. Beautifully written, intensely observed, The Matisse Stories is fiction of spellbinding authority. India Calling: An Intimate Portrait of a Nation's Remaking

India Calling: An Intimate Portrait of a Nation’s Remaking

$4.99

Anand Giridharadas sensed something was afoot as his plane from America prepared to land in Bombay. An elderly passenger looked at him and said, “We’re all trying to go that way,” pointing to the rear. “You, you’re going this way?” Giridharadas was returning to the land of his ancestors, amid an unlikely economic boom. But he was interested less in its gold rush than in its cultural upheaval, as a new generation has sought to reconcile old traditions and customs with new ambitions and dreams. In India Calling, Giridharadas brings to life the people and the dilemmas of India today, through the prism of his émigré family history and his childhood memories of India. He introduces us to entrepreneurs, radicals, industrialists, and religious seekers, but, most of all, to Indian families. He shows how parents and children, husbands and wives, cousins and siblings are reinventing relationships, bending the meaning of Indianness, and enduring the pangs of the old birthing the new. Through their stories, and his own, he paints an intimate portrait of a country becoming modern while striving to remain itself.

Virginity Lost: An Intimate Portrait of First Sexual Experiences

Virginity Lost: An Intimate Portrait of First Sexual Experiences

$29.32

Nervous, inexperienced, confused. For most, losing your virginity is one of life’s most significant moments, always to be remembered. Of course, experiences vary, but Laura Carpenter asks: Is there an ideal way to lose it? What would constitute a "positive" experience? What often compels the big step? And, further, what does "going all the way" really mean for young gays and lesbians? In this first comprehensive study of virginity loss, Carpenter teases out the complexities of all things virgin by drawing on interviews with both young men and women who are straight, gay or bisexual. Virginity Lost offers a rare window into one of life’s most intimate and significant sexual moments. The stories here are frank, poignant and fascinating as Carpenter presents an array of experiences that run the gamut from triumphant to devastating. Importantly, Carpenter argues that one’s experience of virginity loss can have a powerful impact on one’s later sexual experiences. Especially at a time of increased debate about sexual abstinence versus safe sex education in public schools, this important volume will provide essential information about the sex lives of young people.

Stories of Art

Stories of Art

$39.33

Stories of Art is James Elkins’s intimate history of art. Concise and original, this engaging book is an antidote to the behemoth art history textbooks from which we were all taught. As he demonstrates so persuasively, there can never be one story of art. Cultures have their own stories – about themselves, about other cultures – and to hear them all is one way to hear the multiple stories that art tells. But each of us also has our own story of art, a kind of private art history made up of the pieces we have seen, and loved or hated, the effects they had on us, and the connections that might be drawn among them. Elkins opens up the questions that traditional art history usually avoids. What about all the art not produced in Western Europe or in the Europeanized Americas? Is it possible to include Asian art and Indian art in ‘the story?’ What happens when one does? To help us find answers, he uses both Western and non-Western artworks, tables of contents from art histories written in cultures outside the centre of Western European tradition, and strangely wonderful diagrams of how artworks might connect through a single individual. True multiculturalism may be an impossibility, but art lovers can each create a ‘story of art’ that is right for themselves.

The Fallen Sky: An Intimate History of Shooting Stars

The Fallen Sky: An Intimate History of Shooting Stars

$3.95

Weaving natural history, memoir, and the stories of maverick scientists, daring adventurers, and stargazing dreamers, this epic work takes us from Antarctica to outer space to tell the tale of how the study of meteorites became a scientific passion. A famed polar explorer who risked personal ruin-and the lives of his crew-in a quest for massive iron meteorites hidden in an Arctic wasteland. A nervy, obscure professor who staked his life against the scientific indifference of his day to become the world’s most prominent meteorite collector and researcher. An Australian scientist confronted with a geological mystery in the Outback-the key to which might yet unlock a secret of evolution on planet Earth. These characters and many other collectors, researchers, dreamers, schemers, and ordinary people populate Christopher Cokinos’s "The Fallen Sky." Through their foibles and successes, their adventures and tragedies, Cokinos unfolds the panoramic history of how science came to understand meteorites-the rocks that fall from space to the Earth-and how these stones reveal truths not only of the solar system, but of the human heart as well. Long sought as trophies of exploratory success, scientific specimens, or even space-age novelties, meteorites have a long and complex hold on the human psyche. Their allure endures from tribal altars to high-tech labs, and Cokinos incisively explores the drama and history of our pursuit of the fallen sky. Over the course of more than seven years, he crisscrossed the globe from Greenland to the American Southwest, from Australia to Antarctica, following in the footsteps of explorers, collectors, and scientists, gaining access to their personal papers and documents, to try to understand the obsession that draws so many people to these fragments of iron and stone, these pieces of the universe that we can hold in our hands. This is an adventure story, a compelling work of first-person literary journalism, and a scientific history, all told through the lives of its remarkable characters-the eccentrics and geniuses who have committed themselves to understanding the stuff of life and death that comes from the sky.

Parallel Stories

Parallel Stories

$34.12

A once-in-a-generation literary event: the monumental masterwork being hailed as a "twenty-first-century "War and Peace"" ("Magyar Nemzet") In 1989, the year the Berlin Wall came down, a university student on his morning run finds a corpse on a park bench and alerts the authorities. This classic police-procedural scene opens an extraordinary novel that traces the fate of myriad Europeans–Hungarians, Jews, Germans, Gypsies–across the treacherous years of the mid-twentieth century. The social and political circumstances of their lives may vary, their sexual and spiritual longings may seem unique to each of them, yet Peter Nadas’s magnificent tapestry weaves uncanny, reverberating parallels that link them across time and space. Three men are at the heart of "Parallel Stories": Hans von Wolkenstein, whose German mother is linked to dark secrets of Fascist-Nazi collaboration during the 1940s; Agost Lippay Lehr, whose influential father has served Hungary’s political regimes for decades; and Andras Rott, who has his own record of dark activities abroad. They are friends in Budapest when we meet them in the spring of 1961, a pivotal time in the postwar epoch. Their richly detailed, dramatic experiences now center on Budapest, but the action of the novel carries us across Europe from the Alps to river ports on the Danube, from Greece to the North Sea. The daring episodes of "Parallel Stories "explore the most intimate, difficult human experiences in prose glowing with uncommon clarity and mysterious uncertainty. This web of extended dramas reaches not just forward to the transformative year of 1989 but back to the spring of 1939, with Europe trembling on the edge of war; to the bestial times of 1944-45, when Budapest was besieged, the Final Solution devastated Hungary’s Jews, and the war came to an end; and to the cataclysmic Hungarian Revolution of October 1956. "Parallel Stories "is a daring, demanding, and moving exploration of humanity at its most constrained and its most free.

The Revolution Starts at Home: Confronting Intimate Violence Within Activist Communities

The Revolution Starts at Home: Confronting Intimate Violence Within Activist Communities

$13.87

The extent of the violence affecting our communities is staggering. Nearly one in three women in the United States will experience intimate violence in her lifetime. And while intimate violence affects relationships across the sexuality and gender spectrums, the likelihood of isolation and irreparable harm, including death, is even greater within LGBTQI communities. To effectively resist violence "out there"–in the prison system, on militarized borders, or other clear encounters with "the system"–we must challenge how it is reproduced right where we live. It’s one thing when the perpetrator is the police, the state, or someone we don’t know. It’s quite another when that person is someone we call a friend, lover, and trusted ally. Based on the popular ‘zine that had reviewers and fans alike demanding more, "The Revolution Starts at Home" finally breaks the dangerous silence surrounding the "open secret" of intimate violence–by and toward caretakers, in romantic partnerships, and in friendships–within social justice movements. This watershed collection compiles stories and strategies from survivors and their allies, documenting a decade of community accountability work and delving into the nitty-gritty of creating safety from abuse without relying on the prison industrial complex. Fearless, tough-minded, and ultimately loving, "The Revolution Starts at Home" offers life-saving alternatives for ensuring survivor safety while building a road toward a revolution where no one is left behind. Ching-In Chen is the author of "The Heart’s Traffic." Kundiman Fellow Jai Dulani is an interdisciplinary storyteller and activist/educator. Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarasinha is the author of "Consensual Genocide."

$3.95

(Book Jacket Status: Jacketed) Now joining Everyman’s Library–the most extensive and distinguished collectible library of the world’s greatest works–is an appealing new collection in a small Pocket Classics format, perfect for gift giving and reading pleasure. "Christmas Stories" is a treasury of short fiction by great writers of the past two centuries–from Dickens and Tolstoy to John Updike and Alice Munro. As a literary subject, Christmas has inspired everything from intimate domestic dramas to fanciful flights of the imagination, and the full range of its expression is represented in this wonderfully engaging anthology. Goblins frolic in the graveyard of an early Dickens tale and a love-struck ghost disrupts a country estate in Elizabeth Bowen’s "Green Holly." The plight of the less fortunate haunts Chekhov’s "Vanka" and Willa Cather’s "The Burglar’s Christmas" but takes a boisterously comic turn in Damon Runyon’s "Dancing Dan’s Christmas" and in John Cheever’s "Christmas Is a Sad Season for the Poor." From Vladimir Nabokov’s intensely moving story of a father’s grief in "Christmas" to Truman Capote’s hilarious yet heartbreaking "A Christmas Memory," from Grace Paley’s Jewish girl starring in the Christmas pageant in "The Loudest Voice" to the dysfunctional family ski holiday in Richard Ford’s "Creche"–each of the stories gathered here is imbued with Christmas spirit (of one kind or another), and all are richly and indelibly entertaining.

The gripping title story finds Oates boldly reimagining the true-crime story of Andrea Yates, the Texas mother who drowned her children in 2001. Love's Pivotal Relationships: The Chum, First Love, Outlaw and the Intimate Partner

Love’s Pivotal Relationships: The Chum, First Love, Outlaw and the Intimate Partner

$28.6

Tucked within this volume are heartlines, woven equally of two types of tough yet tender threads: tales and thoughts about loving and longing. The weave creates soul stories about pivotal relationships: one’s chum, first love, outlaw, and the intimate partner. The blend of stories and ideas communicates what happens "on the ground" and in the time of daily life. What belongs together is bound together: experience-reflection, meaning-action, smiles and tears. These relationships concern us all. Within them, we experience life’s most important, validating, and memorable "moments." The chum is one’s first best friend. She or he calls me to become– not just a child, a family member, or a follower of the gang– but a unique person. We tame one another. Thus our friendship promotes us to become real, and affords us an abiding presence. Now I will never be alone, but always vulnerable to loneliness. Significantly, the chum bond is unencumbered with the issues of sexuality. My first love draws out the burgeoning man or woman in me. Within the orbit of our "harmonious us," we share a plethora of "firsts" and negotiate the full spectrum of absolutes: the One, the Good, the True, the Beautiful, the Magic, and the Tragic. The person of the person and not sex matters most. It is the outlaw who stirs my passion and rouses the broad and raw dimensions of my sexuality. He is the significant stranger who comes from a world different from my normal, habitual context. She introduces new ways of seeing and comprehending the social world." My outlaw challenges my meaning-system of values, morals and customary practices. With vows or promises, I commit to my intimate partner. He is my constant companion;she is the one I want to grow old with. These relationships index our growth beyond pure biological unfolding; they reveal that my most significant development happens because the "Other," by facing and appealing to me for my response, solicits and provokes growth. Fastened thus to life’s spiral, we zigzag backward and forward over love’s bumps and bruises and soar through love’s thrills and rapture. Our soul stories expose the romantic-erotic patterns created by our wonderful dream-weaver and elusive, cunning, and sometimes loathsome enemy: Time. We remember the "hour" of struggling to love when we had one foot on thin ice and the other on a banana peel. There came the time, too, when we were flying by the seat of our pants, winging it en route, and hoping for the best. We also endured the adventure of innocence lost and innocence regained. The book invites a journey through our gentlest caring and darkest longing, a search through our hopes, dreams, and erotic desires. Open it insofar as you are ripe to dwell upon your feelings, ready to draw from your memory bank, and eager to think your own thoughts. It will not satisfy the reader who wants short cuts, quick-fixes, game plans, strategies, or recipes.

Fidelity: Stories

Fidelity: Stories

$13.39

From acclaimed poet and Giller-nominated novelist Michael Redhill comes Fidelity , a subtle but searing collection of short fiction. By turns brooding, strange, and funny, Fidelity probes the blandishments of temptation, the swooning submission to concupiscence, the illusory redemption of desire, the ambivalence at the heart of the most intimate trust, and, most importantly, the irony that when we betray, we betray ourselves first. His characters are not monsters, or really even sinners. Their vulnerabilities are our own: a business-trip affair leaves a man changed in ways he cannot anticipate; a young girl’s sexuality inflicts unexpected wounds on her family; the young amanuensis of a 156-year-old Civil War veteran tries to defend his hero from accusations of desertion; a father of four, pressured by his wife to undergo a vasectomy, gradually learns that he is capable of infidelity when he contemplates the intolerable loss of his virility. Spell-binding and crackling with an unflinching attention to emotional detail, Fidelity looks boldly at the transgressions of desire that seduce, and sometimes break, body and soul.

Dvora Baron (1887-1956), the first modern Hebrew woman writer, was born in a small Lithuanian town in 1887. Her father, a rabbi, gave his daughter a thorough education, an extraordinary act at the time. Baron immigrated to Palestine in 1910, married a prominent Zionist activist, but defied the implicit ideological demands of the Zionist literary scene by continuing to write of the shtetl life she had left behind. The eighteen stories in this superb collection offer an intimate re-creation of Jewish Eastern Europe from a perspective seldom represented in Hebrew and Yiddish literature of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Baron brings vividly to life the shtetl experiences of women and other disenfranchised members of the Jewish community. Her stories relate the feelings of a newborn girl, a "Jewish" dog, an impoverished bookkeeper, a young widow who must hire herself out as a wet-nurse, and others who face emotional and physical hardships. Baron’s fluid writing style pushes the flexibility of Hebrew and Yiddish syntax to its limits, while her profound knowledge of both biblical and rabbinical literature lends rich subtleties to her stories. A companion to "Conversations with Dvora: An Experimental Biography of the First Modern Hebrew Woman Writer, "by Amia Lieblich (California, 1997), this collection is drawn from Baron’s earlier as well as later works.

Leaving Fundamentalism: Personal Stories

Leaving Fundamentalism: Personal Stories

$37.09

In a time when religious conservatives have placed their faith and values at the forefront of the so-called "culture wars," this book is extremely relevant. The stories in "Leaving Fundamentalism" provide a personal and intimate look behind sermons, religious services, and church life, and promote an understanding of those who have been deeply involved in the conservative Christian church. These autobiographies come from within the congregations and homes of religious fundamentalists, where their highly idealized faith, in all its complexities and problems, meets the reality of everyday life. Told from the perspective of distance gained by leaving fundamentalism, each story gives the reader a snapshot of what it is like to go through the experiences, thoughts, feelings, passions, and pains that, for many of the writers, are still raw. Explaining how their lives might continue after fundamentalism, these writers offer a spiritual lifeline for others who may be questioning their faith. Foreword by Thomas Moore

Appearing in English for the first time, The Curse of Eve illuminates the vagaries of marriage, motherhood and morality, and encapsulates the many small ways in which we make sense of our lives.

The Ancient Memory and Other Stories

The Ancient Memory and Other Stories

$3.95

Death-defying and vulnerable fur-traders and Indians, demi-devils and almost-angels, and other complex personalities come fully to life in "The Ancient Memory, "which completes the collecting of John G. Neihardt’s early short fiction begun with "The End of the Dream and Other Stories. "Originally published in popular magazines between 1905 and 1908, these stories about the American frontier illustrated Neihardt’s artistry in the short form and foreshadow the themes, situations, and characterizations of his later, better-known work. Although two of the Indian stories, the ironic "Feather for Feather" and the satirical "A Political Coup at Little Omaha," were collected in "The Lonesome Trail" in 1907, none has been reprinted since early in the twentieth century. Other stories included here are "Like a Woman," featuring the plucky Pelagie, and "The Face in the Balcony," which is dedicated to "those who have gone through life misunderstood." "The Epic-Minded Scot," about a stranger who is stubbornly idealistic and scrupulous, is considered one of Neihardt’s best tales. "The Brutal Fact" revolves around a William Tell type of contest between trapping partners that anticipates Neihardt’s "Song of Three Friends." "The Lure of Woman," a study of greed and revenge, was expanded into his novel "Life’s Lure," The ineffable "Ancient Memory" carries profound philosophical implications while presenting a strange doppelganger of sorts. Finally, the memorable Waters-an alcoholic, one-legged, one-eyed frontier printer-is introduced in "The Discarded Fetish," which, with minor changes, became the first half of the novel "The Dawn-Builder," In her foreword Neihardt’s daughter Hilda Neihardtrecalls intimate details incidental to the writing of these stories.

An Intimate Loneliness

An Intimate Loneliness

$40.56

An Intimate Loneliness explores how family members attempt to come to terms with the death of an offspring or sibling. Drawing on relevant research and the authors’ own experience of working with bereaved parents and siblings, this book examines the importance of social relationships in helping parents and siblings adjust to their bereavement. The chances of making sense of this most distressing loss are influenced by the resilience of the family’s surviving relationships, by the availability of wider support networks, and by the cultural resources that inform each person’s perception of death. This book considers the impact of bereavement on self and family identity. In particular, it examines the role of shared remembering in transforming survivor’s relationships with the deceased, and in helping rebuild their own identity with a significantly changed family structure. Problems considered include: the failure of intimate relationships, cultural and gender expectations, the invisibility of fathers’ and siblings’ grief, sudden and ‘difficult’ deaths, lack of information, and the sense of isolation felt by some family members.

ANTI-TWITTER’s extreme brevity demonstrates by example that brief need not = dumbed-down. Mothers And Sons: Stories

$11.99

Each of the nine stories in this beautifully written, intensely intimate collection centers on a transformative moment that alters the delicate balance of power between mother and son, or changes the way they perceive one another. With exquisite grace and eloquence, Tóibín writes of men and women bound by convention, by unspoken emotions, by the stronghold of the past. Many are trapped in lives they would not choose again, if they ever chose at all. A man buries his mother and converts his grief to desire in one night. A famous singer captivates an audience, yet cannot beguile her own estranged son. And in "A Long Winter," Colm Tóibín’s finest piece of cction to date, a young man searches for his mother in the snow-covered mountains where she has sought escape from the husband who controls and confines her. Winner of numerous awards for his fifth novel, The Master — including the Los Angeles Times Book Prize and the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award — Tóibín brings to this stunning first collection an acute understanding of human frailty and longing. These are haunting, profoundly moving stories by a writer who is himself a master.

Dear Husband Stories

In A Princeton Idyll a woman is forced to realize decades later her childhood role in the destruction of a famous beloved grandfathers life. The Blind Mans Sighted Daughters — two middle-aged sisters whose lives have evolved in radically different ways — are made to acknowledge their fathers violent past with which they have been silently complicit. In Magda Maria a man tries to break free of the enthralling and dangerous erotic obsession of his life and in the gripping title story Oates boldly reimagines the true-crime story of Andrea Yates the Texas mother who drowned her several children in 2001. Several stories – Suicide by Fitness Center The Glazers and Dear Joyce Carol — take a less tragic turn exploring with mordant humor the shadowy interstices between self-awareness and delusion. Dramatic intensely rendered and always provocative DEAR HUSBAND provides an unsettling and fascinating look into the mysterious heart of America.

The final collection of stories by award-winning writer Marjorie Kowalski Cole, "The City Beneath the Snow" is a portrait of contemporary Alaskans, their interactions, and their foibles. These stories reveal the moral decisions that lurk at unexpected corners in daily life as the characters confront a world at once magical and ordinary, joy-filled and tragic. Together, they give the reader an intimate portrait of a people and place more often portrayed through wilderness specials and reality adventure shows."Cole’s characters live, work, and struggle in interior Alaska, and she depicts life here with a keen eye and with compassion. We see the daughter of a Fairbanks junkyard owner, struggling with her isolation. We meet a bartender at Circle Hot Springs who’s also a certified nurse’s assistant at Fairbanks Memorial Hospital. A newcomer to Fairbanks fall in love with the aurora. We watch a marriage strained nearly to breaking after a young daughter drowns in the slough. We see an alcohol abuse counselor and a pilot who flies her around in the bush trying to find their way after a brief sexual encounter. These are the inner lives, revealed with care and with skill, the true material of good literature."–Peggy Shumaker, Writer Laureate of Alaska

Mothers and Sons: Stories

Mothers and Sons: Stories

$3.94

Each of the nine stories in this beautifully written, intensely intimate collection centers on a transformative moment that alters the delicate balance of power between mother and son, or changes the way they perceive one another. With exquisite grace and eloquence, Toibin writes of men and women bound by convention, by unspoken emotions, by the stronghold of the past. Many are trapped in lives they would not choose again, if they ever chose at all. A man buries his mother and converts his grief to desire in one night. A famous singer captivates an audience, yet cannot beguile her own estranged son. And in "A Long Winter," Colm Toibin’s finest piece of cction to date, a young man searches for his mother in the snow-covered mountains where she has sought escape from the husband who controls and confines her. Winner of numerous awards for his fifth novel, "The Master" — including the "Los Angeles Times" Book Prize and the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award — Toibin brings to this stunning first collection an acute understanding of human frailty and longing. These are haunting, profoundly moving stories by a writer who is himself a master.

"A Primitive Heart" confirms the mastery of David Rabe’s writing and establishes him as an exciting voice in fiction.

The Bed Book of Short Stories

The Bed Book of Short Stories

$36.34

The bed, dressed in hand sewn quilt or threadbare blanket, may in and of itself be memorable, but it is what happens in the bed – the sex and lovemaking, the dreams, the reading, the nightmares, the rest, giving birth and dying – which give ‘bed’ special meaning. Whether a bed is shared with a book, a child, a pet or a partner, whether lovers lie in ecstasy or indifference, whether ‘bed’ relates to intimacy or betrayal, it is memories and recollections of ‘bed’, in whatever form, which have triggered the writing of these thirty stories by women from southern Africa. Well known writers Joanne Fedler, Sarah Lotz, Arja Salafranca, Rosemund Handler and Liesl Jobson will delight, but you will discover here new writers from Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Malawi, Namibia and Zambia, each with a unique voice as they cast light on the intimate lives of women living in this part of the world and the possibilities that are both available to and denied them. The BED BOOK of short stories – some quirky and tender, others traumatic or macabre – is the perfect companion to take to bed with you, to keep you reading long into the night.

Female Trouble: Stories

Female Trouble: Stories

"Nelson’s prose is precise and energetic, and her insights delight because they manage to be at once surprising and so right as to seem inevitable." — The New York Times Book Review Antonya Nelson is widely regarded as one of America’s most talented women writers — The New Yorker has named her one of the twenty best writers of her generation — and with Female Trouble she returns to the short-story form with which she made her original literary mark. Thirteen wise, funny, and startlingly perceptive stories about the vagaries of marriage, the uncertainties of family, and the revelations of female life, Female Trouble looks at the relationships not just between men and women but also between parents and children, brothers and sisters. Probing the subjects of love, fidelity, desire, dependence, and solitude, Nelson explores the broad notion of family from myriad angles, but always with surprising insight and her trademark offbeat humor. The title story features a thirty-year-old man carrying on intimate relationships with three different women — one institutionalized, one pregnant, one purely maternal — but unable to commit to any of them. "Incognito" depicts a divorced woman whose turbulent teen years are suddenly brought back to her when she returns to her hometown with her own teenage daughter. In "The Unified Front," a husband reckons with his wife’s decision to steal a baby while at a famous theme park, and in "Stitches," a disturbing late-night phone call forces a mother to confront her college-age daughter’s sexuality and her own adulterous past. Set in the vividly rendered Southwest and Midwest, these moving stories are dark and honest portraits of people in moral quandaries, gray areas, unclear circumstances — stories that reveal us to ourselves with disturbing clarity. As always, Nelson astounds with the clean, terse power of her language, and she deftly uses humor to expose the soft underbellies of her tough-talking, unblinking characters. These are stories that will linger in the reader’s mind long after they are read.
