Intimate Relationship

Have you ever been not that physical of a person but still able to find a quality intimate relationship?
To clear things up, when I say ‘not that physical’, I just mean in that you don’t usually do the initiating and are not that physically affectionate in your daily life but you still want an affectionate relationship, it’s just that it is more of a challenge than for most people. That describes myself and I am worried that it will be a hindrance towards future intimacy.
Have you had that dilemma but were still able to get past it for a rewarding relationship? If so, what helped you?
If I’m understand what you’re saying then yeah, I’m like that. I perfer more of a intimate friendship kind of relationship than a physically active one.

An Intimate One-On-One Relationship $14.99 “Many of us may believe connecting to the earth and universe can bring a form of “peace,” hard work: “success,” and treating ourselves and others well can bring us “happiness.” But how do we receive “joy”? Happiness depends on what’s happening outside of us, such as materialistic achievements and how people treat us. Joy is what we have despite what’s happening around us — a special gift received from being in an intimate relationship with our Triune Creator…The best of us miss the mark and, at least, emulate sin in thoughts. How we treat others, including ourselves, knowingly and unknowingly, is also a factor. How then do we enter into the presence of the Holy One — our Creator? The significant question every human being from all religions and thoughts should now ask is: “How do I get freedom from the consequences of missing the mark (sin)? How does our Creator solves this challenge for us?”Matthew 16:13-17 NKJV When Jesus came into the region of Caesarea Philippi, He asked His disciples, saying, “Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?” So they said, “Some say John the Baptist, some Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter answered and said, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Jesus answered and said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven.”The same two questions remain for us also: Who does everyone else say Yeshua Christ is? Who do you say He is? Your answer to the latter is the most important answer of your lifetime.” |

The Road to Relationship $11.99 “Chronicling the personal struggles of one man to find the true center of his Christianityan intimate relationship with GodThe Road to Relationship is an honest account of author Andy Allens own search for his true faith. By identifying the mistaken focuses of his faith, Allen generalizes these struggles to all Christians and describes how the same struggles existed in the lives of our biblical predecessors. Many of the unique issues that arise as man attempts to become intimate with God, such as the need for self-expression, the role of our emotions, and the part that circumstances play in this relationship, are addressed with a candor any walk of life can relate to. Looking at relationship from both the human and divide perspective, The Road to Relationship is a personal look at the desperate pursuit to understand the principles of a meaningful and satisfying relationship with our God.” |

Relationship Trauma $108.47 RELATIONSHIP TRAUMA reveals in-depth experiences of eleven women who survived abusive and traumatic intimate relationships. It is based on a comprehensive research study through which a theory emerged depicting intricate and dynamic pushing-pulling processes that the women endured in these destructive relationships. This theory encapsulates the increasingly intense mental, emotional, behavioural, physical, and spiritual effects of abuse and trauma, the varied coping strategies used throughout the relationship, how the women broke free from the grips of the emotional tie, and their road to recovery. The traumatic relationship progresses through a series of stages: from the initial development of a loving bond, to its eventual distortion, and finally to breaking the emotional lock after becoming traumatized. This book is essential reading for researchers, clinicians, and those individuals who share these devastating experiences to gain a deeper understanding of the abusive relationship that becomes traumatic and for learning new ways to recover from its grip. |

The Impossibility of Sex: Stories of the Intimate Relationship Between Therapist and Patient $18.63 The conventional view of a patient in therapy has been that of someone who forms a powerful, erotic bond with the therapist. On the other hand, the view of the therapist has been that of a neutral listener, emotionally unaffected by the patient. But what really does go on within the sacrosanct space of the therapist’s office? Distinguished psychotherapist Susie Orbach provides the answers as she presents six stories of patients, all of whom suffer from such common afflictions as depression, loneliness, compulsive eating, consuming sexual desires, and fear of attachment. In each story, Orbach reveals not just the client’s problems, but — with startling honesty — the effect the client has on her as therapist. "The Impossibility of Sex" breaks new ground by taking us into the center of the therapy relationship, one usually shrouded by therapist-client confidentiality. From the unlikely role the therapist plays in the troubled relationship of two lesbians to the unsettling dreams the therapist experiences while treating a man consumed by sexual desire, Orbach illuminates the complex human interactions at the heart of the therapeutic process and the "joint discoveries" that contribute to its effectiveness. |

In this book Dr. Scuka presents an up-to-date, comprehensive theoretical and practical treatment of RE, in which he gives the reader a guide to implementing the principles of this dynamic theory. The book is written principally with couples therapy in mind, although there is an acknowledged relevance to family therapy, and the author calls attention the many skills and therapy techniques that would be applicable to family therapy. Though designed to allow a therapist of any level of experience to begin working with the RE model, this book is more than a standard cookbook, as it considers a variety of special RE therapy techniques, discusses the entire clinical intake process, the application of the RE model to the treatment of affairs, use with difficult clients, and family therapy issues such as domestic violence and stepfamilies. |

The Intimate Lives of the Founding Fathers $16.61 An intimate look at the founders–George Washington, Ben Franklin, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, Alexander Hamilton, and James Madison–and the women who played essential roles in their lives With his usual storytelling flair and unparalleled research, noted historian Thomas Fleming examines the relationships between the Founding Fathers and the women who were at the center of their lives. They were the mothers who powerfully shaped their sons’ visions of domestic life, from hot-tempered Mary Ball Washington to promiscuous Rachel Lavien, Hamilton’s mother. Lovers and wives played even more critical roles. We learn of the youthful Washington’s tortured love for the coquettish Sarah Fairfax, a close friend’s wife; of Franklin’s two "wives," one in London and one in Philadelphia; of how lonely, deeply unhappy Abigail kept home and family together for years on end during Adams’s long absences; of Hamilton’s adulterous betrayal of his wife and their eventual reconciliation; of how the brilliant Madison, jilted by a flirtatious fifteen-year-old, went on to marry the effervescent Dolley, who helped make this shy man into a popular president. Jefferson’s controversial relationship with Sally Hemings is also examined, reinterpreting where his heart truly lay. |

The Intimate Lives Of The Founding Fathers $10.09 A compelling intimate look at the founders George Washington Ben Franklin John Adams Thomas Jefferson Alexander Hamilton and James Madison and the women who played essential roles in their lives With his usual storytelling flair and unparalleled research Tom Fleming examines the women who were at the center of the lives of the founding fathers. From hot-tempered Mary Ball Washington to promiscuous Rachel Lavien Hamilton the founding fathers’ mothers powerfully shaped their sons’ visions of domestic life. But lovers and wives played more critical roles as friends and often partners in fame. We learn of the youthful Washington’s tortured love for the coquettish Sarah Fairfax wife of his close friend; of Franklin’s two "wives " one in London and one in Philadelphia; of Adams’s long absences which required a lonely deeply unhappy Abigail to keep home and family together for years on end; of Hamilton’s adulterous betrayal of his wife and then their reconciliation; of how the brilliant Madison was jilted by a flirtatious fifteen-year-old and went on to marry the effervescent Dolley who helped make this shy man into a popular president. Jefferson’s controversial relationship to Sally Hemings is also examined with a different vision of where his heart lay. Fleming nimbly takes us through a great deal of early American history as his founding fathers strove to reconcile the private and public often beset by a media every bit as gossip seeking and inflammatory as ours today. He offers a powerful look at the challenges women faced in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. While often brilliant and articulate the wives of the founding fathers all struggled with the distractions and dangers of frequent childbearing and searing anxiety about infant mortality Jefferson’s wife Martha died from complications following labor as did his daughter. All the more remarkable then that these women loomed so large in the lives of their husbands and in some cases their country. |

George Gershwin: An Intimate Portrait $26.24 George Gershwin lived with purpose and gusto, but with melancholy as well, for he was unable to make a place for himself–no family of his own and no real home in music. He and his siblings received little love from their mother and no direction from their father. Older brother and lyricist Ira managed to create a home when he married Leonore Strunsky, a hard-edged woman who lived for wealth and status. The closest George came to domesticity was through his longtime relationship with Kay Swift. She was his lover, musical confidante, and fellow composer. But she remained married to another man while he went endlessly from woman to woman. Only in the final hours of his life, when they were separated by a continent, did he realize how much he needed her. Fatally ill, unprotected by (and perhaps estranged from) Ira, he was exiled by Leonore from the house she and the brothers shared, and he died horribly and alone at the age of thirty-eight. Nor was Gershwin able to find a satisfying musical harbor. For years his songwriting genius could be expressed only in the ephemeral world of show business, as his brilliance as a composer of large-scale works went unrecognized by highbrow music critics. When he resolved this quandary with his opera Porgy and Bess, the critics were unable to understand or validate it. Decades would pass before this, his most ambitious composition, was universally regarded as one of music’s lasting treasures and before his stature as a great composer became secure. In George Gershwin: An Intimate Portrait, Walter Rimler makes use of fresh sources, including newly discovered letters by Kay Swift as well as correspondence between and interviews with intimates of Ira and Leonore Gershwin. It is written with spirited prose and contains more than two dozen photographs. |

NATO and the UN: A Peculiar Relationship $25.65 When the North Atlantic Treaty Organization was formed just four years after the United Nations, it provided its members with a measure of security in the face of the Soviet Union’s veto power in the senior organization’s Security Council, as well as a means of coping with Communist expansion. Ever since then, the two institutions have been competitors in maintaining peace in the postwar world. Occasionally they have cooperated; more often they have not. In "NATO and the UN," Lawrence Kaplan, one of the leading experts on NATO, examines the intimate and often contentious relations between the two and describes how this relationship has changed over the course of two generations. Kaplan documents the many interactions between them throughout their interconnected history, focusing on the major flashpoints where either NATO clashed with UN leadership, the United States and the Soviet Union confronted each other directly, or fissures within the Atlantic alliance were dramatized in UN sessions. He draws on the organizations’ records as well as unpublished files from the National Archives and its counterparts in Britain, France, and Germany to provide the best account yet of working relations between the two organizations. By examining their complex connection with regard to such conflicts as the Balkan wars, Kaplan enhances our understanding of both institutions. Crisis management has been a source of conflict between the two in the past but has also served as an incentive for collaboration, and Kaplan shows how this peculiar but persistent relationship has functioned. Although the Cold War years are gone, the UN remains the setting where NATO problems have played out, as they have in Iraq during recent decades. And it is to NATO that the UN has turned for military power to face crises in the Balkans, Middle East, and South Asia. Kaplan stresses the importance of both organizations in the twenty-first century, recognizing their potential to advance global peace and security while showing how their tangled history explains the obstacles that stand in the way. His work offers significant findings that will especially impact our understanding of NATO while filling a sizable gap in our understanding of post-World War II diplomacy. |

The Wisdom of Forgiveness: Intimate Journeys and Conversations $3.95 The most intimate conversation yet with the world’s most famous holy man. When Victor Chan first visited the Dalai Lama in the 1970s, he assumed that, since he is a member of the race responsible for destroying Tibet, the Dalai Lama would treat him with disdain. Instead, they developed a close relationship, out of which Victor was able to pose some of the most personal questions ever asked of or answered by the Dalai Lama. From the conversations in "The Wisdom of Forgiveness," we discover under which circumstances the Dalai Lama believes he could be capable of violence; how the experience of profound spiritual insight feels in the body and mind; how he learned to love those who anyone else would consider an enemy; what his personal fears are; what the heart of a holy man looks like in medical tests; and how a highly developed spiritual person experiences pain. "The Wisdom of Forgiveness" takes these two friends on journeys from India to Ireland; from the former Czechoslovakia to a pilgrimage to Buddhist holy sites. If you’ve ever wondered why we love the Dalai Lama so much, this book makes it clear by placing us in the presence of a great being. |

Charlie Chaplin: Intimate Close-Ups $22.03 Many remember Charlie Chaplin’s comic masterpiece, The Gold Rush, as the finest blend of comedy and farce ever brought to the screen. Far fewer remember its heroine, Georgia Hale (1900-1985). Seventy years after the film’s appearance, Heather Kiernan brings Georgia Hale back to life in this edition of her hitherto unpublished memoirs. Research work embodied in her perceptive introduction clears up many uncertainties about Hale’s life and provides an outline of her most significant years. Hale’s own chief purpose was to describe her long and close relationship with Chaplin and his dual personality, which made the relationship at times a love-hate one. As Chaplin’s constant companion during the years 1928-1931, she became a part of his social circle, meeting people as diverse as Marion Davies, Sergei Eisenstein, Ralph Barton, and Albert Einstein. The memoir effectively ends with Chaplin’s marriage in June 1943 to Oona O’Neill. This unique book contains illustrations from the Chaplin archive, most of which are published here for the first time. |

Intimate Strategies of the Civil War: Military Commanders and Their Wives $3.95 From Robert E. and Mary Lee to Ulysses S. and Julia Grant, Intimate Strategies of the Civil War examines the marriages of twelve prominent military commanders, highlighting the impact wives had on their famous husbands’ careers. Carol K. Bleser and Lesley J. Gordon assemble an impressive array of leading scholars to explore the marriages of six Confederate and six Union commanders. Contributors reveal that, for many of these men, the matrimonial bond was the most important relationship in their lives, one that shaped (and was shaped by) their military experience. In some cases, the commanders’ spouses proved relentless and skillful promoters of their husbands’ careers. Jessie Fremont drew on all of her connections as the daughter of former Senator Thomas Hart Benton to aid her modestly talented husband John. Others bolstered their military spouses in less direct ways. For example, Ulysses S. Grant’s relationship with Julia (a Southerner and former slave owner herself) kept him anchored in stormy times. Here, too, are tense and tempestuous pairings, such William Tecumseh Sherman and his wife Ellen–his foster sister before becoming his wife–and Jefferson Davis’s fascinatingly complex bond with Varina, further complicated by the hostile rumors about the two in Richmond society. Throughout, these historians paint remarkably intimate portraits of their subjects. Readers will see these famed men in a way that they perhaps never considered: not merely as famous leaders, but as lovers, husbands and fathers. |

Psychotherapy: An Erotic Relationship: Transference and Countertransference Passions $37.24 "Psychotherapy: An Erotic Relationship" explores the most intimate elements of the psychoanalytical relationship–the erotic feelings and fantasies that patients and therapists often experience towards one another. David Mann challenges the traditional view that transference and countertransference are forms of resistance which threaten the therapeutic process and argues that they are potentially a powerful source of creative transformation. Making use of clinical material, theoretical insights and new research on infants, Mann traces erotic development back to the parent-child relationship. Drawing parallels between this relationship and the therapist/client dyad, he explains how the parent and therapist alike experience a range of erotic responses which correspond to relevant stimulus from the infant or patient. Individual chapters explore the function of the erotic within the unconscious, pre-Oedipal and Oedipal material, homoeroticism in therapy, sexual intercourse as a metaphor for psychological change, the primal scene and the difficulties of working with perversions. |

The First Relationship: Infant and Mother, with a New Introduction $12.84 Daniel Stern’s pathbreaking video-based research into the intimate complexities of mother-infant interaction has had an enormous impact on psychotherapy and developmental psychology. His minute analyses of the exchanges between mothers and babies have offered empirical support and correction for many theories of development. In the complex and instinctive choreography of "conversations," including smiles, gestures, and gazing, Stern discerned patterns of both emotional harmony and emotional incongruity that illuminate children’s relationships with others in the larger world. Now a noted authority on early development, Stern first reviewed his unique methods and observations in "The First Relationship." Intended for parents as well as for therapists and researchers, it offers a lucid and nontechnical overview of the author’s key ideas and encapsulates the major themes of his subsequent books. "When I reread "The First Relationship" I was astonished to find in it almost all the ideas that have guided my work in the subsequent decades. At first I didn’t know whether to be depressed or delighted. As I thought it over, I am encouraged by the realization that I had some basic perspective at the very beginning that was sufficiently well founded to guide twenty-five years of observation and ideas…This book makes it possible to see, or foresee, the unfolding of an intrinsic design."–from the new introduction by Daniel Stern |

The Archaeology of Colonialism: Intimate Encounters and Sexual Effects $35.03 This volume examines human sexuality as an intrinsic element in the interpretation of complex colonial societies. While archaeological studies of the historic past have explored the dynamics of European colonialism, such work has largely ignored broader issues of sexuality, embodiment, commemoration, reproduction, and sensuality. Recently, however, scholars have begun to recognize these issues as essential components of colonization and imperialism. This book explores a variety of case studies, revealing the multifaceted intersections of colonialism and sexuality. Incorporating work that ranges from Phoenician diasporic communities of the eighth century to Britain’s nineteenth-century Australian penal colonies to the contemporary maroon community of Brazil, this volume changes the way we understand the relationship between sexuality and colonial history. |

Intimate Ties, Bitter Struggles: The United States and Latin America Since 1945 $20.03 Over the last sixty years, the relationship between the United States and Latin America has been marred by ideological conflict, imbalances of power, and economic disparity. The U.S.-sponsored coup in Guatemala, the near lynching of Vice President Richard Nixon in Venezuela, and the disastrous Bay of Pigs invasion are a few reminders of the sometimes dramatic confrontations between North and South. Yet this relationship has also been characterized by accelerating economic and cultural interdependence that is significantly altering the old paradigm of U.S. hegemony and Latin American resistance. Alan McPherson uses multinational sources to survey and analyze the history of this relationship. "Intimate Ties, Bitter Struggles" reflects the most up-to-date research on state-to-state interactions and recognizes the influence of culture and non-state actors on international relations. Major topics include the debate over economic dependency, the U.S. response to revolutions in Latin America during the Cold War, military interventions and covert operations, human rights, migration, the North American Free Trade Agreement and economic integration, the Iran-Contra affair, the war on drugs, and Latinos in the United States. The author’s concise narrative and selection of primary-source documents offer an ideal introduction to U.S.-Latin American relations for students and for anyone with an interest in understanding the dynamic interplay between these hemispheric neighbors. |

Enchanted Love: The Mystical Power of Intimate Relationships $3.95 Three of Marianne Williamson’s previous bestsellers — "A Return to Love, A Woman’s Worth, " and "Illuminata" — explored the issue of relationships. Now, in this deeply personal collection of essays, prayers, and self-reflection, she turns to romantic love. In "Illuminata, " Williamson wrote that "we experience God to the extent to which we love, forgive, and focus on the good in others and ourselves." Now, in "Enchanted Love, " she writes that "enchanted partnership begins with the conscious understanding, on the part of two people, that the purpose of their relationship is not so much material as spiritual, and the internal skills demanded by it are prodigious." High romance, she says, "is not about past or future. It is not about practicality. It is not about society or worldly routines. It is an audacious ride to the center of what "is, " at the heart of every person. It is a bold and masterful inquiry into what two people really are and how we might become, while still on earth, the angels who reside within us." |

A Typology of Domestic Violence: Intimate Terrorism, Violent Resistance, and Situational Couple Violence $17.9 Domestic violence, a serious and far-reaching social problem, has generated two key debates among researchers. The first debate is about gender and domestic violence. Some scholars argue that domestic violence is primarily male-perpetrated, others that women are as violent as men in intimate relationships. Johnson’s response to this debate–and the central theme of this book–is that there is more than one type of intimate partner violence. Some studies address the type of violence that is perpetrated primarily by men, while others are getting at the kind of violence that women areinvolved in as well. Because there has been no theoretical framework delineating types of domestic violence, researchers have easily misread one another’s studies. The second major debate involves how many women are abused each year by their partners. Estimates range from two to six million. Johnson’s response once again comes from this book’s central theme. If there is more than one type of intimate partner violence, then the numbers depend on what type you’re talking about. Johnson argues that domestic violence is not a unitary phenomenon. Instead, he delineates three major, dramatically different, forms of partner violence: intimate terrorism, violent resistance, and situational couple violence. He roots the conceptual distinctions among the forms of violence in an analysis of the role of power and control in relationship violence and shows that the failure to make these basic distinctions among types of partner violence has produced a research literature that is plagued by both overgeneralizations and ostensibly contradictory findings. This volume begins the work of theorizing forms of domestic violence, a crucial first step to a better understanding of these phenomena among scholars, social scientists, policy makers, and service providers. |

Why Do They Kill?: Men Who Murder Their Intimate Partners $33.2 Moving backwards from the murders they committed through their adult lives, relationship histories, and their childhoods, the author sought to understand what motivates the men to kill. The patterns he found reveal that the murders were neither impulsive crimes of passion nor were they indiscriminate. "Why Do They Kill?" is the first book to profile different types of wife killers, and to examine the courtship patterns of abusive men. The author shows that wife murders are not, for the most part, "crimes of passion," but culminations of lifelong predisposing factors of the men who murder, and that many elements of their crimes are foretold by their past behavior in intimate relationships. Key turning points of these relationships include the first emergence of the man’s violence, his blaming of the victim, her attempts to resist, his escalation, her attempts to end the relationship, and his punishment for her defiance. Critical perspective on the men’s accounts comes from interviews with victims of attempted homicide (standing in for the murder victims) who survived shootings, stabbings, and strangulation. These women detail their partner’s escalating patterns of child abuse, sexual violence, terroristic threats, and stalking. The section on help-seeking patterns of victims helps to dispel notions of learned helplessness among victims. |

Enchanted Love: the Mystical Power of Intimate Relationships $3.95 Three of Marianne Williamson’s previous best-sellers — "A Return to Love, A Woman’s Worth, " and "Illuminata" — explored the issue of relation- ships. Now, in this deeply personal collection of essays, prayers, and self- reflection, she turns to romantic love. "Enchanted Love" envisions a way of being in love with another person and at peace and at one with God and with ourselves. It envisions a reinvention of romantic love as our newest spiritual frontier. In "Illuminata" Williamson wrote that "we experience God to the extent to which we love, forgive, and focus on the good in others and ourselves." Now, in "Enchanted Love, " she writes that "enchanted partnership begins with the conscious understanding, on the part of two people, that the purpose of their relationship is not so much material as spiritual, and the internal skills demanded by it are prodigious." High romance, she says, "is not about past or future. It is not about practicality. It is not about society or worldly routines. It is a bold and masterful inquiry into what two people really are and how we might become, while still on earth, the angels who reside within us." Filled with parables and references to classic myths and legends of love, "Enchanted Love" also contains some of Williamson’s beautiful signature prayers to help readers — single or coupled — meditate and awaken to the possibilities of romantic enchantment within themselves and with their partners. We can only experience what we are willing to acknowledge, Williamson writes, as she guides us on a sacred journey from our disenchanted worlds to a paradise on earth, where we and our loved ones can give and receive enchanted love. |

Franklin And Winston: An Intimate Portrait Of An Epic Friendship $6.59 The most complete portrait ever drawn of the complex emotional connection between two of history’s towering leaders Franklin Roosevelt and Winston Churchill were the greatest leaders of "the Greatest Generation." In Franklin and Winston, Jon Meacham explores the fascinating relationship between the two men who piloted the free world to victory in World War II. It was a crucial friendship, and a unique one a president and a prime minister spending enormous amounts of time together (113 days during the war) and exchanging nearly two thousand messages. Amid cocktails, cigarettes, and cigars, they met, often secretly, in places as far-flung as Washington, Hyde Park, Casablanca, and Teheran, talking to each other of war, politics, the burden of command, their health, their wives, and their children. Born in the nineteenth century and molders of the twentieth and twenty-first, Roosevelt and Churchill had much in common. Sons of the elite, students of history, politicians of the first rank, they savored power. In their own time both men were underestimated, dismissed as arrogant, and faced skeptics and haters in their own nations yet both magnificently rose to the central challenges of the twentieth century. Theirs was a kind of love story, with an emotional Churchill courting an elusive Roosevelt. The British prime minister, who rallied his nation in its darkest hour, standing alone against Adolf Hitler, was always somewhat insecure about his place in FDR’s affections which was the way Roosevelt wanted it. A man of secrets, FDR liked to keep people off balance, including his wife, Eleanor, his White House aides and Winston Churchill. Confronting tyranny and terror, Roosevelt and Churchill built a victorious alliance amid cataclysmic events and occasionally conflicting interests. Franklin and Winston is also the story of their marriages and their families, two clans caught up in the most sweeping global conflict in history. Meacham’s new sources including unpublished letters of FDR’s great secret love, Lucy Mercer Rutherfurd, the papers of Pamela Churchill Harriman, and interviews with the few surviving people who were in FDR and Churchill’s joint company shed fresh light on the characters of both men as he engagingly chronicles the hours in which they decided the course of the struggle. Hitler brought them together; later in the war, they drifted apart, but even in the autumn of their alliance, the pull of affection was always there. Charting the personal drama behind the discussions of strategy and statecraft, Meacham has written the definitive account of the most remarkable friendship of the modern age. From the Hardcover edition. |

Laura Bush: An Intimate Portrait Of The First Lady $9.29 When Laura Bush moved into the White House on January 20, 2001, everyone wanted to know what kind of first lady she would be. Would she be like Mamie Eisenhower? Would she follow in Barbara Bush’s footsteps? Would she be another Hillary Clinton? "I think I’ll just be Laura Bush," she would say. On Saturday, April 30, 2005, the world got a glimpse of what that meant when she pushed aside the leader of the free world and stole the show at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner. Wearing a shimmering lime green Oscar de la Renta gown, Laura wisecracked that she was a "desperate housewife" married to a president who was always asleep at nine. Replayed constantly on the air, the stand-up routine with its impeccable comedic timing turned the first lady into a glittering star. But while the performance catapulted her to new status, it did not answer the question of who this former teacher and librarian really is and just what role she plays in influencing her husband and shaping his administration. The Bushes are more effective than the FBI or CIA at keeping secret what goes on behind the scenes at the White House, the ranch, or Camp David. Now, New York Times bestselling author Ronald Kessler draws back that curtain in the first biography of Laura Bush to be written with White House cooperation. Based on interviews with her closest friends and confidantes from childhood to the present, as well as family members and administration heavyweights like Condoleezza Rice and Andrew Card, Kessler paints a portrait of a woman who, even as she ascended to the heights of political fortune and power, never lost touch with the bedrock American values she absorbed in her youth. In this unprecedented account, Kessler reveals: How Laura’s opinions have brought budget changes to a range of federal agencies and have affected her husband’s policies, appointments, and worldview. Why Laura told her press secretary in May 2001 she did not want to do any more media interviews. What President Bush said to Laura at the dinner table after giving the "go" for the invasion of Iraq, and what his father, former President George H. W. Bush, wrote him the next day about the war. What Laura’s own political opinions are and what her relationship with twin daughters Jenna and Barbara is really like. What Laura says in private about Hillary Clinton, media attacks on her husband, and his victory in the 2004 election. And why Laura, at the age of seventeen, missed a stop sign and caused a fatal accident that tragically left one of her best friends dead. LAURA BUSH offers a remarkable look at the private world of this famously reserved woman, as well as the beliefs and attitudes that shape it. The book will surprise readers whose knowledge of the first lady comes from cautious media interviews and speeches. Laura Bush’s approval rating stands at 85 percent. Since opinion polls first began asking about them, no first lady has received a higher rating. |

Emotional Intelligence in Couples Therapy: Advances from Neurobiology and the Science of Intimate Relationships $41.94 Yet even when they know what would work, partners often find that they are unable to do these things. Why is this? Provocative new neurological research suggests that old habits die hard for a reason-they may be woven into the fabric of brain states. We are wired for specific kinds of neural activations very early in life and these habitual responses are automatically activated in daily living, often without conscious awareness. Once they are set, these activation patterns (also known as response states) are likely to continue throughout a person’s life. For the most part, we don’t volunteer for these response states; we simply find ourselves under their influence. When any one of them is activated, we may lose the capacity to choose freely our thoughts and actions. It’s as if, at that moment, someone else is in charge. For these reasons and others, people in relationships may find it extremely difficult if not impossible to change how they respond to their partners. No matter how much partners want to change, their wired response states oppose their intentions. Part 1 of this book is a tour of the revolutionary discoveries emerging from neurobiology and the science of intimate relationships. Atkinson shows readers the implications of these discoveries for those who seek to change interpersonal habits and improve intimate relationships. These neural operating programs may also help explain why psychotherapies often fail to promote lasting change. In Part 2 readers will find a remedy for this problem. Atkinson introduces Pragmatic/Experiential Therapy for Couples (PET-C), a step-by-step approach to working with couples that facilitates relationship change by promoting increased levels of neural integration in each partner. In PET-C, partners learn to identify mood states which perpetuate outmoded thoughts, attitudes, and habits of interaction. Once identified, clients are then assisted in the process of "re-wiring" these states for more flexibility and then activating alternate states which support new avenues for thought and action. Extensive case examples and ample illustrations of therapeutic dialogue demonstrate for readers the ins and outs of implementing PET-C with their clients. This book is supplemented by a companion CD-ROM titled Developing Habits for Relationship Success. The CD-ROM has two workbooks-for clients with male partners and clients with female partners-that can be personalized with the client’s name and printed out on demand. The workbooks contain dozens of take-home exercises designed to help clients identify troublesome response states and then develop new emotional habits. The discovery and understanding of the brain’s neural operating systems is of huge importance for anyone who seeks to make sense of troubled relationships and understand why partners often persist in self-defeating interactions. Emotional Intelligence in Couples Therapy is essential reading for anyone working with couples and seeking a new way |
